Our Founderโs Story
EyeTech began with a personal challenge. In 1991, after years of coding in the defense industry at Lockheed Martin, Robert Chappell developed a repetitive strain injury that made using a keyboard and mouse increasingly painful. As he searched for solutions, he discovered early eye-gaze technology โ but the available options were expensive, limited, and not built for everyday computer use.
Seeing the gap, Robert envisioned something better: an eye tracker that could fully replace the mouse and operate seamlessly within the Windows environment. In 1995, leveraging the growing power of personal computers and the release of Windows 95, he built one of the first true โeye miceโ โ a system that performed all image processing on a general-purpose PC using accessible hardware.
With the support of his sister, Melinda Trego, who helped organize and grow the business, EyeTech Digital Systems was born. Together, they set out with a clear mission: to develop cutting-edge eye-gaze technology that empowers people with disabilities to communicate and interact with the world.
EyeTech went on to pioneer multiple industry firsts, including the first Windows-based eye tracker, the first eye tracker to fully replace a mouse (enabling movement, clicking, and dragging), and the first USB-powered standalone eye tracker available on the market.
What started as a search for relief became a commitment to innovation โ and a mission to expand access to communication for all.
